Win A Copy Of E-Numbers by Stefan Gates

I'd be interested to read this book. I find shopping a bit of a chore, trying to read the labels and work out what to buy. There are just so many things to take in to account and even with fresh food you're not sure where it's come from and what's happened to it.

I am very interested in this book because the E numbers are supposedly so much better than the US numbers we have to put up with... please bring on the science!

I have always tried to avoid foods which have more than two or three E-numbers on them, but someone pointed out that some packets just have the full name of the chemical on them instead, so it's hard to tell. Not sure now whether I should be focussing on something else. Would enjoy reading the book to find out!

I'm so looking forward to reading this book whether won or bought . There is far too much contradictory and sensational advice and reporting out there. It will be great to get a balanced and considered view.

I saw the TV show that went with this book, a few months ago. Thought it was brilliant - you got to see him making red dye from squashing bugs and getting E numbers from vomit and liposuction. Really made me rethink a bit about the whole 'artificial' thing. Haven't read the book though and would love to.

There are certain E-numbered food additives that I would avoid, such as artificial food colourings, flavourings, certain preservatives etc. I don't avoid E numbers completely though, many are natural foodstuffs in themselves and, being a scientist, I always remember that E-numbered foods (and the levels of them used) must be safe in order to be used at all - there are strict criteria for their usage. Incidentally I don't read newspapers routinely, so am not influenced by scaremongering stories from the printed press.

I learned a few things already from this review. I am all in favour of common sense, and knowing the facts instead of jumping blindly on the bandwagon seems to be key here. Stefan Gates clearly know his onions (sorry, couldn't resist!)and I would love to read this book. Thanks for reminding me to check him out!

Here are my ten favourite ones of the last few weeks. They are all reasonably healthy (some of them are for sharing) and none of them require a degree in cake decorating, architecture or landscape gardening to achieve. CALL TO ACTION - CAN YOU PLEASE SPEND 1-2 MINUTES TO HELP TO PROTECT SCHOOL FOOD? As you may know, Michael Gove asked the Dimblebys from Leon restaurant chain to draw up another school food plan. Whether you consider this a stalling tactic on his part or a valid process, we should still contribute. They can only use the information which is out there to format their plan, whether it is research evidence or us telling them our opinions. We can't complain about the outcome if we don't...
Garden Crafts For Children by Dawn Isaac I hope you won't mind me mentioning Chr***mas when it's still only November, but I have a great recommendation for a stocking filler for a child in your life. I'm not on some kind of commission or something(!) I just genuinely think it is a lovely book. Garden Crafts For Children is a fab book by Dawn Isaac, who is a garden designer and writer of the lovely kids gardening blog Little Green Fingers....
