Healthy Lunchbox Ideas - your response Details
There are now quite a few organisations trying to improve the food in children's lunchboxes.
Websites, recipe books, leaflets from the NHS, from your school, from organisations like the School Food Trust, Healthy Schools and others.

Then there was the recent story about a day nursery reducing a toddler to tears because his cheese sandwich did not meet their guidelines. Many organisations have no rules on lunchboxes, and some have very strict suggestions.

What information have you seen, and how useful have you found it? Are the suggested recipes achievable and have you tried any of them?

my school has a no junk policy issued with a supportive leaflet. That makes it really easy as i know that my child will never ask for chocolate/biscuits or crisps because none of there friends will have it. I generally try and give a balance lunchbox with a ham/cheese sandwich, chedder cheese stick or babybel, some fruit. Grapes are ideal with carrot/cucumber stciks. Then a home made cake and/or a yogurt. Sometimes i send a pasta salad. The salad usually being frozen peas/sweetcorn/brocolli. They love it as its so colourful. I was given advise on wraps but they didnt like them. I tried dips too but it was too fiddly for them and me. They need food they an grab and eat quickly so playtime is maximised 10/05/2010 15:17:00

Advice that stems from the principles of the eatwell plate is always a good place to start. See www.healthylunch.org.uk for advice on how to create a parent friendly leaflet and the sorts of things to include. The key is to educate and empower parents, not tell them what to do.

I personally have seen no information myself. I am, however, a peripatetic teacher rather than a parent,so perhaps these have passed me by! I know, however, that my school has a no junk food policy and the children, if they do bring a snack for playtime, it has to be healthy. We also have a fruit club and toast club for the pupils if they happen to be peckish and want a healthy(ish) snack 10/05/2010 20:56:00
