The Foodies / Resources
These pages are a mixture of our own resources, and those we have found from other people and organisations. Some resources here have been provided by practitioners and parents who have tried and tested them, but you will have to assess for yourself the benefits for your own children and whether it will meet the guidelines you are working with.
Some resources are created by food industries. While they are not allowed to promote intentionally inaccurate information, they will naturally wish to promote their product as the most important part of the diet. However some of the resources they provide are very good when used in context. Wherever I am aware that a resource is industry sponsored I will say so, and you can exercise your common sense in evaluating it.

Websites About Individual Foods19/04/2009 09:55:00 Websites About Individual Foods There are quite a lot of websites now promoting foods, what they are and how they fit into our diet. I have listed all the ones I can find which cater to under 8's here. Please let me know if you find any I have missed. Please be aware when surfing that many of them are created by food industries. While they are not allowed to promote intentionally inaccurate information, they will naturally wish to promote their product as the most important part of the diet. However some of the resources they provide are very good when used in context. Wherever I am aware that a site is industry sponsored I will say so, and you can exercise your common sense in evaluating it.
The Grain Chain
Industry sponsored. This website has some useful resources related to bread and wheat.
There is an age 5-7 section with teacher's and children's items. Examples are a video of a bread factory, wheat growing worksheets, nine lesson plan ideas, and a quiz. Curriculum links are provided.
Food Champs
This site uses colourful fruit and vegetable superheros to guide you through some games, recipes, colouring pages and activities. Divides into ages 2-5 and 6-8 although some of the younger activities are quite difficult for under 5s so you may like to check both groups. Colourful and fun.
Food A Fact Of Life
This is the children's site for the British Nutrition Foundation, so you can trust the general nutritional on the site. They have a section for 3-5 year olds and one for 5-8 year olds. Each section has some videos on cooking, some recipes and interactive games. Plus there are loads of step by step recipes highlighting key skills. In the next months the teachers centre from their main site will also be moving to this site. http://www.foodafactoflife.org.uk
The Blackcurrant Foundation
The Blackcurrant Foundation were set up to promote the blackcurrant and champion its health benefits etc. There are some useful facts about blackcurrants and some tasty recipes. There are also some fun worksheets etc to download. Obviously many commercial blackcurrant products have a lot of added sugar, so any consideration of blackcurrants health benefits need to include a bit of savvy consumer advice, but treated with respect this website has some interesting companion bits and pieces if you are growing blackcurrants as a crop.
Bramley Apples Site
Bramley apples are the most recognisable cooking apple in the UK and children will have eaten them in pies and sauces many times, and probably seen them as windfall apples as they are grown all over. This site has useful nutritional facts and a little potted history of the Bramley apple, as well as some good and really easy recipes. If you're cooking apples or growing them, this site is useful background.
British Leafy Salad Association
This site is set up to promote the different types of salads you can grow and buy in this country. There are some nice recipes and informaiton - the industry / growing information is too sophisticated for young ones to take in, but one page which is really helpful is the Know Your Leaf page which has pictures and names for lots of common salad leaves, so children (and adults) can use it to identify some of the leaves you have grown in salad seed mixes. That page is at
British Leeks Site
Did you know that in 640AD Welsh soldiers wore leeks in their helmets to distinguish themselves from the enemy? Neither did I. This site has recipes, facts, history and bags of great images of leeks both in recipes and raw.
British Onions Site
The onion is one of those staples we don't often give much thought to. The factual information on this site is more suitable for adults or older children but it has some fantastic recipes and an image bank (at the bottom of the recipes section) which can be used for non commercial purposes, including some great images of raw onions.
Seasonal Berries
This site is part of a campaign funded by the British Summer Fruits Association to raise the profile of when berries are in season. The site has lots of facts, recipes, an image gallery for free non-commercial use, and a kids section.
British Tomato Growers' Association
Again, a site created to promote commercial tomato growing. There is a useful Tomato Facts section with history and nutritional facts although these are pitched at adult readers. There is also a kids section with games for under and over 11s. The activities on the 5-11 section require some reading ability or an adult helper. There are some interactive games in a glasshouse which would suitable for KS1 children.
British Carrots
This site promotes carrots in the diet. There's a little bit of history (including explaining the myth about seeing in the dark), a few facts, and some great recipes. There is a children's section with some games, although there is an element of 'good food / bad food' in the material which may not be to everyone's liking with young children. There is a very good image gallery for press or non commercial use.
Watercress.co.uk
You may be growing watercress and there are some interesting facts and bits of history on here, plus a surprisingly large bank of recipes.
