Resources

These pages are a mixture of our own resources, and those we have found from other people and organisations. Some resources here have been provided by practitioners and parents who have tried and tested them, but you will have to assess for yourself the benefits for your own children and whether it will meet the guidelines you are working with.

Some resources are created by food industries. While they are not allowed to promote intentionally inaccurate information, they will naturally wish to promote their product as the most important part of the diet. However some of the resources they provide are very good when used in context. Wherever I am aware that a resource is industry sponsored I will say so, and you can exercise your common sense in evaluating it.

Eat Smart Play Smart Lesson Plans

These resources have been around for a while and were created by the Food Standards Agency. They have now moved them into their online archive where you can download them free.

These 15 activities have full teacher’s notes and advice on how to use them in class. There are 8 activities about food and nutrition and 7 on being more active. I have listed only the food ones below as that is the focus of this site, but the play ones are also well worth checking out as they are very practical.

The lessons are downloadable as pdfs, there are online notes about how to integrate them into the curriculum and there are curriculum links for every lesson, although as this is an archived piece, the odd few may now be outdated. The lessons can be found here Eat Smart Play Smart Archive

The lesson contents are:

Eat Smart activity session 1: Being healthy
Aim: To introduce the concept of 'being healthy'.

Aim: To introduce the concept of the Balance of Good Health model and its five food groups.

Aim: To promote the positive role of fruit and vegetables in a balanced diet.

Aim: To introduce the concept that the bread, other cereals and potatoes group provides energy (although all foods provide energy in different amounts).

Aim: To introduce the concept that milk and dairy foods are important for health, especially for teeth and bones.

Aim: To introduce the concept that all food comes from animals and plants.

Aim: To introduce the concept that some foods contain fat and some foods contain sugar.

Aim: To review the food groups and their proportions as depicted in the Balance of Good Health model.
