Pretend Play Grocery Store

Playing "Shop" is a huge part of most people's childhoods and most homes have a bit of play food or a little cash register in them at some point. However after the hundredth time your child has brought you a basket of food and then taken it all back again, you might need some ideas for extending their play to bring out their imagination and enhance their learning. Also what do you do when you have a mixture of ages involved and older children need some additional challenge?

This blog post on the No Time For Flashcards website gives some good suggestions, using labels for sorting, specials menus and food group categorising for her older son, while still allowing her toddler to run around delivering and chewing the plastic food.

As the post explains, the age of the children will tell you whether you should use real produce or play food, and which ideas to try.
You could of course also introduce play money to practice some emerging maths skills too.

Anyway check out the post and see the great pictures to give you a little shot of inspiration next time your children want to play shop.

Salad Dressing in a Jar

Salad Dressing in a Jar The easiest way for children to learn to make a salad dressing is to assemble the ingredients in a jar and give it a really good shake. Dressings need a really good mix in order to emulsify, and shaking it is quite a good way to do that without getting an achey arm whisking or splashing everywhere. This video version from Look and Taste Tips youtube channel is a mustard one (because it was made to give a great tip about using up the last sc...

Celery Stalk Rose Prints

Celery Stalk Rose Prints This is a lovely idea I saw on Maureen Cracknell's Homemade site. It's a cute thing to do next time you have a recipe which needs a whole head of celery in one go and therefore you cut off the stump rather than peeling individual stalks, or you can do the same with a head of crunchy lettuce. So next time you have one of those recipes, get your paints out and let your kids make some pretty art or some greetings cards. The original is h...

Egg Herb Garden

Egg Herb Garden

Egg Herb Garden This is a fun way to grow a small herb garden, which would make a sweet gift from a child to a cook in their family. The infographic below shows you all the steps you need to know, the main thing is to take the top off carefully so you may want to help children with this or take the top off before they get started. Large plants will obviously need transplanting - this one features a tomato which would need potting on. But chives, basil, thyme, parsley,...

Bird's Nest Easter Cakes

Bird's Nest Easter Cakes Every childhood should include making an Easter egg nest cake, and there are various traditional versions using shredded wheat, cornflakes and other breakfast cereals. We found this version on Oscar's Lunch youtube channel- it is a cute little time lapse video running you through the steps to make it in less than a minute. There is also a proper recipe and instructions over on the delightful Oscar's Lunch blog, which you can find here....
