WildlifeKate's Video Site

WildlifeKate is a blogger from Staffordshire who has set up a BRILLIANT site full of webcams of garden wildlife.

Kate is, it's fair to say, a bit obsessed with encouraging wildlife into her garden. Lucky for us, she's also a bit obsessed with filming it, so she has set up loads of live streaming cameras for us to see.

If you want to show children how amazing "ordinary" garden wildlife can be, and especially on days when the weather makes it hard to get outside, this site is brilliant.

Lots of Kate's cameras run live streaming. In nesting season she has seven different nest box cameras so you can see baby chicks of different species and find out about where the boxes are and who is in them. So if you are looking at life cycles this is a brilliant and cute tool.

There is a handy guide to the birds you might see on the bird feeders.so you can pick them out easily, and there are often squirrels too, and Kate has feeding stations for voles, mice and hedgehogs too which can be seen at night.

I highly recommend visiting the site and looking at the camera feeds, but be warned, they are a bit addictive, so get a cup of tea first! Check out her site

Egg Herb Garden This is a fun way to grow a small herb garden, which would make a sweet gift from a child to a cook in their family. The infographic below shows you all the steps you need to know, the main thing is to take the top off carefully so you may want to help children with this or take the top off before they get started. Large plants will obviously need transplanting - this one features a tomato which would need potting on. But chives, basil, thyme, parsley,...

Bird Bingo We found this fun activity on the brilliant Nature Detectives site. Children love the idea of bird watching but when it comes to sitting for long periods and waiting, they obviously have limited patience and shorter concentration spans. Also bird watching can be hit and miss depending on your garden or park - some have a wider variety of birds than others. This game makes it easy for children to succeed because it relies on...

Identifying trees from buds and twigs

Identifying bare winter trees from buds and twigs We found this activity for the outdoors on Nature Detectives. This is an activity for your garden, park, nature walk or school playing field, pretty much anywhere you can find are a variety of trees. Normally we identify trees by their overall shape, their leaf shapes and their fruits or seeds. During the winter months trees are mostly bare and this makes it harder to identify what type they are (e....

Cleaning and Sharpening Your Garden Tools. Garden tools can be really expensive but they can last a long time if they are looked after properly. But what does that mean, exactly? Should we wash them? Do we need special equipment to sharpen them? How often should we do it? This short video from Backyard Farmer shows you how to clean and sharpen basic tools in autumn or winter, ready for the next season. It's a good job to do when the days are short and th...
