Tree Collages

This activity can be done in small groups or a whole a class, or even as a family project. The task of making a tree collage involves all the kids working together to create a realistic picture of a tree on the ground or on a sheet.

Children need to collect larger branches for the trunk, smaller pieces for the branches of the tree and then even smaller twigs for the thinner branches to make the outline, then adding fruit and of course leaves to make the tree more colourful. We combined this with an activity about parts of a tree but you can combine it with any tree related activities as well as art projects.

We found this activity on
Nature Detectives.
You can print off their worksheet here.

We recently did this activity with a group of class 2 children in less than perfect weather, the foraging of branches was fun in the mud! The photo shows that we added small twigs to the bottom of the tree to signify roots as we were learning about parts of a tree and wanted to include the roots too.

As well as creating this college using the nature material we found around the school we also taught the kids to name each part of the tree and the purpose of it; for example the roots are used to bring nutrients from the ground up into the tree.

Pitta Bread Christmas Tree Snacks Loving this simple open sandwich snack using pitta breads and guacamole which we found over at Live Better America. The original recipe mixes store bought guacamole with sour cream and some herbs, but you can improvise using whatever you have, you can use plain guacamole, or make your own! Unlike a lot of novelty snacks this one is not wasteful as you can make several triangles from a pitta, and you don't have lots of cutouts to bin. ...
