Making Paper Pots

Making plant pots out of paper does three things:
- shows that you don't need to spend lots of money on fancy pots to do gardening
- shows how materials can be recycled
- works on children's manual dexterity skills and their ability to follow instructions

This kit shown can be purchased from Victoriana nursery's online shop.

Paper pots are also really useful if you want to start seeds indoors, which don't like being transplanted because they don't react well to having their roots disturbed. Root crops like carrots, parsnips etc are particularly sensitive. In paper pots you can just plant the whole thing, you don't disturb the roots and the pot just rots away into the soil.

This video from
Victoriana Nursery shows how some KS1 children make their own seed pots out of paper, using a pot making tool. The video also contains a discussion of carrots and how they grow, so if you are just looking for the paper pots section, the activity starts at 4 mins 40 secs.

If you don't have a paper pot maker, or enough of them for your group of children, here's a video from Bevoworks of how you can make one using a glass or plastic tumbler.

Salad Dressing in a Jar The easiest way for children to learn to make a salad dressing is to assemble the ingredients in a jar and give it a really good shake. This video version from Look and Taste Tips youtube channel is a mustard one (because it was made to give a great tip about using up the last sc...

Egg Herb Garden This is a fun way to grow a small herb garden, which would make a sweet gift from a child to a cook in their family. The infographic below shows you all the steps you need to know, the main thing is to take the top off carefully so you may want to help children with this or take the top off before they get started. Large plants will obviously need transplanting - this one features a tomato which would need potting on. But chives, basil, thyme, parsley,...

Easter Bunny Breakfast

Easter Bunny Breakfast with Scrambled Egg and Bacon Loving this creative Easter breakfast. I know it's fab to get up and do the Easter egg hunt, but you need to get some 'proper food' into kids before they really pile in to the pile of chocolate. This is a great breakfast idea which will fill them up and make them smile and enable you to get them to postpone the chocolate carnage for a little longer. The recipe was created by Carrie over at worthpinning.com and was inspired by some ...
