The Foodies / Resources
These pages are a mixture of our own resources, and those we have found from other people and organisations. Some resources here have been provided by practitioners and parents who have tried and tested them, but you will have to assess for yourself the benefits for your own children and whether it will meet the guidelines you are working with.
Some resources are created by food industries. While they are not allowed to promote intentionally inaccurate information, they will naturally wish to promote their product as the most important part of the diet. However some of the resources they provide are very good when used in context. Wherever I am aware that a resource is industry sponsored I will say so, and you can exercise your common sense in evaluating it.

Jamie Oliver's Crunchy Garlic Chicken09/06/2011 11:43:00 Jamie Oliver's Crunchy Garlic Chicken This recipe is part of Jamie Oliver's bank of recipes being provided for his US Food Revolution. It is a great basic recipe because it provides the satisfaction of a chicken nugget for the fast food lover in your house. However they are easy for children to help to make and is a much healthier alternative to a processed nugget, as they can be baked instead of fried and you know what meat has gone into them, unlike the rather suspect frozen ... Crispy Breaded Cauliflower09/06/2011 10:44:00 Crispy Breaded Cauliflower I found this recipe on a cool site for kids called Root4Kids which encourages children to get growing across America. I've put some further information about the site in the websites section. This particular recipe was given to the site by dietitian Heidi McIndoo. If your kids like crispy everything this is a great way to get them to enjoy the taste of cauliflower, which not everyone gets straight away. It is oven baked rather than fried, so is a healthy... Ladybird Pizzas09/05/2011 12:25:00 Ladybird Pizzas This fun and easy recipe is on Rachael Ray's fab kids food site www.yum-o.org The recipe uses kids fascination with ladybirds to make this pizza, using pesto and an English muffin which makes it very quick and easy. You can obviously use the basic idea and change the toppings, as long as the basic red-background-and-spots idea still works. Click here to go to the original recipe. ... St Patrick's Day Green Monster Smoothie17/03/2011 09:58:00 St Patrick's Day Green Monster Smoothie If you're wanting to do something green and fun but healthy for a St Patrick's Day after school snack, why not try this Green Monster smoothie, created by Brenda Thompson for the Food With Kid Appeal website, which aims to share practical healthy meal ideas which kids will actually go for. This recipe uses... believe it or not... spinach! You wouldn't think a spinach smoothie could be acceptable to kids, but the overripe bananas and yoghurt mak... Fab Fruit Jelly04/03/2011 20:32:00 Fab Fruit Jelly Shop bought jellies are dead convenient, but they are full of additives - an occasional treat. If you make your own jelly, though, you can indulge a bit more often. It's a great way to use some lovely ripe summer fruits when they're in season and cheap, but can also be made in the middle of a miserable winter day to brighten your spirits with frozen berries. This recipe was given to me by Fi Bird of Stirrin Stuff. It makes 3-4 servings. Ingredients ... Kiwi Sorbet28/02/2011 19:45:00 Kiwi Sorbet We've all bought a pack of kiwis and they've all started to get too ripe at the same time. Here's a great recipe which needs very ripe kiwis and apart from the syrup heating stage, the kids can join in with all the other jobs. This recipe was given to me by food writer Fi Bird of Stirrin Stuff. It makes about 600ml which is about 4 servings. Ingredients 150g golden granulated sugar 300ml water 6 ripe kiwi fruit Juice half lemon Egg white ... Rice Krispies On A Stick Chicken Strips11/02/2011 15:44:00 Rice Krispies On A Stick Chicken Strips This recipe on About.com by kids cookery writer Barbara Beery uses rice krispies to help with the crispy crumb. It's a good recipe both to appeal to children to eat it, and because it is easy for them to help with - most of the ingredients being bashed and shaken in a bag. Children can help with the mixing and coating, and threading the chicken pieces on to the barbecue skewers. To read the whole recipe and g... No Bake Choc Apricot Oat Treats10/02/2011 13:07:00 No Bake Choc Apricot Oat Treats This is a clever and more nutritious (but still very treaty) variation on the crushed-biscuit-no-bake-choc-slice so beloved by everyone. It uses smashed up oatcakes and dried apricots instead. This recipe was given to me by Fiona Bird of Kids Kitchen. It makes about 24 cakes using a mini-muffin or cupcake tin. Ingredients 100g rough oatcakes 150g dark chocolate 50g butter 2 tablespoons dried chopped ... Suet Free Christmas Pud17/12/2010 11:45:00 Suet Free Christmas Pudding This brilliant Christmas pudding recipe was given to me by Fiona Bird of Kids Kitchen. I like it because there are lots of tasks in it for children to join in with, and there is no suet in it. Also, although like most puddings, it benefits from being made a long time in advance, it can also be made closer to Christmas and will still taste yummy. Leave out the Cointreau if you're uncomfortable putting it in or use orange juice instead. ... Yummy Scrummy Oaty Biscuits22/11/2010 13:26:00 Yummy Scrummy Oaty Biscuits You can never have too many successful biscuit recipes. Biscuit dough is great for kids to make, no rising, and easy to mix. Here's a fab 'throw it all in and stir' oaty biscuit recipe being cooked by two of the kids at the Gardening With Children team. ... Elderflower Cordial22/11/2010 13:14:00 Elderflower Cordial Although elderflower cordial requires pouring some boiling water, and therefore children can't complete the whole process, there is so much they can help with. Helping to find and pick the elderflower heads, washing them and taking all the creepy crawlies out of them, straining them off and then enjoying the results makes it very worthwhile, especially the magic of the fact that they were picked for free! Here is a nice version of an Elderflower Cordial ... Mini Sweet corn, Bacon and Chive Frittatas07/09/2010 10:43:00 Mini Sweetcorn, Bacon and Chive Frittatas This recipe was sent in with kind permission by Fi Bird. I love that it uses baking for a the kind of comfort food which would normally be fried. Ingredients Makes 12 Oil for greasing 4 rashers back bacon 1 heaped tablespoon sweet corn 1 tablespoon grated cheese 6 eggs 150ml milk Freshly ground pepper 1 tablespoon chives Put the oven on 200ºC Fan180º... Summer Pea Soup06/07/2010 14:49:00 Summer Pea Soup This recipe was kindly given to us by Fi Bird, author of Kids Cooking. It is a lovely bright coloured sunny recipe. PERFECT if you've been growing your own peas and salad potatoes but you could make it with frozen ones too. As fi says "This is a lovely green soup that explodes with the sweet flavour of freshly harvested summer peas." Ingredients Half a leek ... Blackberry Muffins02/02/2010 14:14:00 Blackberry Muffins One of the greatest thing to do with kids is pick blackberries. The trick is getting any home without them all being scoffed while you're collecting them! If you're picking in a town or city, be careful not to pick on main roads where there will be a lot of traffic pollution, or near the ground where over-excited dogs may have made their mark! Amanda Grant's website has this great, easy muffins recipe using blackberries. They're VERY tasty. Go to http://amandagrant... Parmesan Popovers24/09/2009 20:32:00 Parmesan Popovers I found this recipe on a lovely blog called What's Cooking. A popover is basically a yorkshire pudding type affair - so called because it puffs up and 'pops over' the top of the muffin cups. If you can think your way past the idea that all batters must relate to sausages or roast beef and that it can stand in its own right, it is a very versatile base for lots of other flavours. This one is a lovely way to use some fresh herbs if you've been picking them wi... Lemony Courgette and Goats Cheese Pizza14/07/2009 16:14:00 Lemony Courgette and Goats Cheese Pizza Found a fabulous recipe over at smittenkitchen.com and tried it out, it's really yummy and dead easy. You could obviously adapt it according to what you have in or prefer, and it's great for children who don't tolerate cows milk well. The recipe uses a really good pizza base recipe which they have on the site, but you could equally do it with your own base or a ready made one, for a super quick tea. Plus if you help with the courgette slicing, ... Choccy Courgette Cupcakes24/06/2009 13:22:00 This recipe appeared in This Is Kids Stuff magazine in July 09.
