These pages are a mixture of our own resources, and those we have found from other people and organisations. Some resources here have been provided by practitioners and parents who have tried and tested them, but you will have to assess for yourself the benefits for your own children and whether it will meet the guidelines you are working with.
Some resources are created by food industries. While they are not allowed to promote intentionally inaccurate information, they will naturally wish to promote their product as the most important part of the diet. However some of the resources they provide are very good when used in context. Wherever I am aware that a resource is industry sponsored I will say so, and you can exercise your common sense in evaluating it.

19/04/2009 10:03:00 Websites About Growing Things
There are quite a few websites now for growing things. Many of them assume a level of motor skills and concentration beyond the competency of the youngest children, so you may need to pick and choose the bits which will work. We have tried to include only websites here which have good information for grown-ups or accessible activity for young children.
Potatoes For Schools
Industry sponsored. This is a brilliant site if you are learning about or growing potatoes. There are videos and instructions showing you exactly how to plant and grow them, online games, teachers notes and recipes. Schools can also register for some free seed potatoes each year.
Dan The Gardener
Dan The Gardener is a children’s gardening and environmental project which uses a range of fun characters to teach children about the natural world in fun and exciting ways, giving them a sense of responsibility and respect for their surroundings and understanding that "It only takes small changes to make a big difference". http://danthegardener.co.uk
Grow Veg.com
This is a site all about growing food, including some guides and a blog. But the really cool thing is their garden planning tool – which helps you plan your garden. You can pay to subscribe long term but there is a free 30 day trial to see if it’s useful and get your initial ideas down. Good if you’re new to it all and don’t know where to start on your site.
Square Foot Gardening
This is a great website for ideas if you have a small space for growing things and want inspiration. Square foot gardening divides you space into small squares and grows a different crop in each square. It lends itself well to comparative exercises from growing e.g. which square grew the most money / most crop / most variety etc. This site was set up by an successful American square foot gardener and has lots of good tips. http://www.squarefootgardening.com
BBC Online Gardening Sections
The BBC has a section on growing fruit and vegetables, which has basic instructions for a reasonable range of produce. The instructions are very basic, but some of the produce also has short video clips to go with the growing instructions from BBC TV shows, so children can see the seeds or plants being planted. Not a bad starting point. http://www.bbc.co.uk/gardening/basics/techniques/growfruitandveg_index.shtml
Self Sufficientish
This website and accompanying book was set up by two brothers and describes itself as “the urban guide to almost self-sufficiency”. There are loads of really clear instructions and diagrams on different aspects of growing things in a small urban space, green technology and recipes using seasonal produce. Not the first or biggest set of articles but definitely one of the clearest. http://www.selfsufficientish.com/
Think Food And Farming
The UK Year of Food and Farming in 2007-8 was a great success. It aimed to promote healthy living by offering children and young people direct experience of the countryside, farming and food through growing and cooking activities, and visits to farms. The campaign continued as Think Food and Farming and this is their website, which at heart is a signposting service. There are lots of links to growing resources on here. There is also information about events in your area. http://www.thinkfoodandfarming.org.uk
Duchy Originals Garden Organic For Schools Site
A nationwide campaign that helps children to grow fruit and vegetables at school and learn more about their food. It also helps children to enjoy a wide range of vegetables as part of a healthy diet. Thousands of schools are taking advantage of this free resource; membership offers help and support to schools every step of the way. Members receive: personal practical gardening advice, curriculum based resources, telephone helpline, Heritage seeds, a competition, members' experiments and much more. http://www.schoolsorganic.net
