Resources

These pages are a mixture of our own resources, and those we have found from other people and organisations. Some resources here have been provided by practitioners and parents who have tried and tested them, but you will have to assess for yourself the benefits for your own children and whether it will meet the guidelines you are working with.

Some resources are created by food industries. While they are not allowed to promote intentionally inaccurate information, they will naturally wish to promote their product as the most important part of the diet. However some of the resources they provide are very good when used in context. Wherever I am aware that a resource is industry sponsored I will say so, and you can exercise your common sense in evaluating it.

Websites About Where Food Comes From

People are getting more interested in farming, the environment, and the processing and transport of food. These websites contain information about the food we buy before it gets to our shopping basket.

Think Food And Farming
The UK Year of Food and Farming in 2007-8 was a great success. It aimed to promote healthy living by offering children and young people direct experience of the countryside, farming and food through growing and cooking activities, and visits to farms. The campaign continued as Think Food and Farming and this is their website, which is at heart a signposting service. There is information on arranging farm visits, and getting farmers to visit you, plus links and resources. There is also information about events in your area. http://www.thinkfoodandfarming.org.uk

The Grain Chain

Industry sponsored. This website has some useful resources related to bread and wheat.
There is an age 5-7 section with teacher's and children's items. Examples are a video of a bread factory, wheat growing worksheets, nine lesson plan ideas, and a quiz. Curriculum links are provided.

Agri Aware Incredible Edibles

Agri Aware is a charitable organisation set up to champion farming in Ireland. Their useful website has lots of ideas for activities, recipes and an online game. If you are based in Ireland they also have activities which you can join in with and send in your results.
