Resources

These pages are a mixture of our own resources, and those we have found from other people and organisations. Some resources here have been provided by practitioners and parents who have tried and tested them, but you will have to assess for yourself the benefits for your own children and whether it will meet the guidelines you are working with.

Some resources are created by food industries. While they are not allowed to promote intentionally inaccurate information, they will naturally wish to promote their product as the most important part of the diet. However some of the resources they provide are very good when used in context. Wherever I am aware that a resource is industry sponsored I will say so, and you can exercise your common sense in evaluating it.

Calendar September 2010

18TH SEPTEMBER - 3RD OCTOBER

BRITISH FOOD FORTNIGHT

Hundreds of schools use British Food Fortnight as an opportunity to teach young people about food and how to cook. On the website you will find downloadable pdfs of resource packs; contact details and a list of things to consider when inviting a chef to teach a cookery lesson; ideas on how to involve parents; and advice on how to gain publicity for your events. http://www.britishfoodfortnight.co.uk/

23RD SEPTEMBER - 23RD OCTOBER

SEED GATHERING SUNDAY

The Tree Council annual autumn festival, which wants us to make the most of trees for their fruit and nuts, seeds and beautiful autumn leaves. This is the best time in the year to gather seeds from many of our more common trees. Conkers, acorns, birch cones, beechnuts, ash helicopters, rowan berries and apples - they're just some of the fruits and nuts ripe for gathering in the autumn and nurturing to grow into trees. Go for a healthy walk in the crisp autumn air and take your pick of seeds or join in with one of the many organised events taking place during Seed Gathering Season, all over the country – visit http://www.treecouncil.org.uk/

31ST OCTOBER

HALLOWE’EN

Children love Hallowe’en and it’s a great chance to help children not only to try pumpkin recipes, but also to create some ‘spooky’ recipes. The BBC has some ideas at http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/news_and_events/events_halloween.shtml
